Article 1, Section 9, Clause 5: Prohibition on taxes on exports

No Tax or Duty shall be laid on Articles exported from any State.

This relatively straightforward and uncontroversial clause prohibits any duty or export tax on anything exported from the United States.

A Harbor Maintenance Tax was struck down in 1996 on the basis of this clause, since the tax was on good being loaded for export.
