An Easter homily for Right and Left
Constitutionalist classical liberals have always been a varied lot in their approach to Christianity. Perhaps there are a few more agnostics in the tent nowadays, though militant atheists remain remarkably scarce. But whether Christian in every sense, or of the Jesus as wise human teacher school, we seem agreed on a couple of pertinent obervations:
Jesus said, “You can be as I am.”* Populists say, “I’m just as good as you are.”
Jesus said, “All that I have is yours.” Socialists say, “All that you have is mine.”**
*This seems to us to be the clear sense of 1 John 3:1-3. This is reflected in the Catholic concept of partaking of the divine nature, and the Orthodox doctrine of apotheosis. Mormons seem to take it very literally.
**We are indebted to Father Robert Sirico for this observation, which inspired our other observation.
